Mahishasura Mardini Stotram — Ayi Girinandini: twenty-one verses to the slayer of Mahiṣa
Author Ādi Śaṅkarācārya Verses 22, a tāla-driven song metre of sixteen-syllable-unit lines metre

Few hymns are sung as loudly or as often as this one. Its lines are built of rhyme and drumbeat, and each verse closes on the same refrain to Mahishasura Mardini, the form of Durga who killed the buffalo-demon. The battles of the Devī Māhātmya pass by in flashes, then the hymn slows into praise of her beauty and ends in a plain request: be kind to me.

अयि जगतो जननी कृपयासि यथासि तथाऽनुमितासि रते ।
