Chapter Nine · The city decked out · Verses 1–

आरती

The city is dressed for the day. Golden jars stand at every door, with banners, garlands and arches, the streets are sprinkled with fragrance and drawn with elephant-pearls, and drums sound. Women wave offerings and bless, holding golden trays of lamps, and sing. Even the Vedas, Śeṣa and Sarasvatī have praised the city's wealth, and they stand amazed; how can men say its merit, Umā? The women are like lilies of the Ayodhyā lake which closed at the setting of the sun of Raghupati's parting, and opened on seeing the moon of Rāma. Good omens come as the Lord goes home.
