Chapter 74 · Why the Lord removes pride · Verses 1–

Bhuśuṇḍi says he will tell, as best he can, the glory of Raghupati and how the Lord's delusion once fell on him. Garuḍa is a vessel of Rāma's grace and dear to him, so he will hide nothing and will sing the most secret thing. It is Rāma's nature never to let his servants keep pride. Pride is the root of the world and gives all kinds of pain and grief. So the merciful Lord removes it, since his love for his servant is great. A mother cuts a child's boil, though the child cries out; she does not count his pain, for she wants the disease to end. Tulasīdāsa asks why anyone would not worship such a Lord.

Listen, lord of the birds, to the glory of Raghupati. I shall tell the lovely tale as best I can, and how the Lord's delusion once came over me, all that I shall tell you.

Friend, you are a vessel of Rāma's grace, and your love for Hari's virtues gives me joy. So I hide nothing from you, and sing the most secret and lovely thing.

Hear Rāma's natural way: he never lets his servants keep pride. Pride is the root of the world, the giver of many pains, and the cause of all sorrow.

In the same way Raghupati removes his servant's pride for his good. Tulasīdāsa says: why will you not worship such a Lord, leaving your confusion?
