Chapter 55·Śiva promises the tale·Verses 1–
Pārvatī asks, merciful lord, how the crow got this holy, lovely story of the Lord, and how Śiva himself heard it. Garuda, very wise, a mine of virtue, a servant of Hari who lives very near him: for what reason did he go to the crow and leave the crowd of sages to hear the story? Tell me how the talk went between two devotees of Hari, a crow and the king of serpent-eaters. Hearing Gaurī's simple, lovely words, Śiva spoke, glad. 'Blessed, Satī, is your pure mind; your love for Raghupati's feet is not small. Listen to the most holy history, hearing which all the delusions of the world end, faith rises in Rāma's feet, and a man crosses the sea of the world without effort. The dohā says that he will tell, with respect, the very question the king of birds put to the crow when he went there: Umā, listen with your mind set on it.
