बसिष्ट मुनि
One day the sage Vasiṣṭha came to where the fair Rāma sat, home of joy. Rāma gave him great honour, washed his feet and took the foot-water. Vasiṣṭha, folding his hands, said, 'Listen, Rāma, I have a request. Seeing your conduct again and again, great confusion comes in my heart. Your greatness is without measure; the Vedas do not know it. How can I tell? The work of a priest is very low, and the Vedas, Purāṇas and Smṛtis blame it. When I would not take it up, Brahmā told me, "What gain is there for you in the future, son? The Supreme Spirit, Brahman in human form, will be born as the ornament of the Raghu kings." Then I thought in my heart: I will do yoga, sacrifice, vows and giving for this; I will gain him; there is no other dharma like it.'एक बार मुनि वसिष्ठ वहाँ आए जहाँ सुख के धाम सुन्दर राम बैठे थे। रघुनायक ने बड़े आदर से उनके चरण धोए और चरणोदक लिया। वसिष्ठ ने हाथ जोड़कर कहा: 'हे राम, सुनिए; हे कृपासिंधु, मेरी एक विनती है। आपका आचरण देख-देखकर मेरे हृदय में बहुत मोह होता है। आपकी महिमा अपार है, वेद भी नहीं जानते; हे भगवान, मैं कैसे कहूँ? पुरोहिताई का कर्म बहुत नीच है; वेद, पुराण और स्मृतियाँ उसकी निन्दा करते हैं। जब मैंने उसे नहीं लिया तब ब्रह्मा ने मुझसे कहा: "हे पुत्र, आगे तुम्हें इसमें लाभ होगा। परमात्मा ब्रह्म, मनुष्य रूप में रघुकुल के भूषण राजा होंगे।" तब मैंने मन में विचार किया: जिसके लिए योग, यज्ञ, व्रत, दान किया जाता है, उसे मैं पाऊँगा; इसके समान कोई दूसरा धर्म नहीं।'

एक बार मुनि वसिष्ठ वहाँ आए जहाँ सुख के धाम राम बैठे थे। रघुनायक ने अत्यन्त आदर से उनके चरण धोकर चरणोदक लिया।
One day the sage Vasiṣṭha came where Rāma, the home of joy, sat. Raghunāyaka honoured him greatly, washed his feet and took the water.

२2राम सुनहु मुनि कह कर जोरी। कृपासिंधु बिनती कछु मोरी ॥देखि देखि आचरन तुम्हारा। होत मोह मम हृदयँ अपारा ॥
rāma sunahu muni kaha kara jorī kṛpāsiṃdhu binatī kachu morī |dekhi dekhi ācarana tumhārā hota moha mama hṛdayam̐ apārā ||

मुनि ने हाथ जोड़कर कहा, 'हे राम, सुनिए, कृपासिंधु, मेरी एक छोटी विनती है। आपका आचरण देख-देखकर मेरे हृदय में बहुत मोह उत्पन्न होता है।
With folded hands the sage said, 'Rāma, hear me, ocean of mercy, I have a small request. Seeing your conduct again and again, great delusion rises in my heart.

३3महिमा अमित बेद नहिं जाना। मैं केहि भाँति कहउँ भगवाना ॥उपरोहित्य कर्म अति मंदा। बेद पुरान सुमृति कर निंदा ॥
mahimā amita beda nahiṃ jānā maiṃ kehi bhām̐ti kahaum̐ bhagavānā |uparohitya karma ati maṃdā beda purāna sumṛti kara niṃdā ||

आपकी महिमा अपार है, वेद भी उसे नहीं जानते; हे भगवान, मैं कैसे कहूँ? पुरोहिताई का कर्म बहुत नीच है; वेद, पुराण और स्मृतियाँ उसकी निन्दा करती हैं।
Your greatness is without measure; the Vedas do not know it. How, Lord, can I tell it? The work of a priest is very low, and the Vedas, Purāṇas and Smṛtis blame it.

४4जब न लेउँ मैं तब बिधि मोही। कहा लाभ आगें सुत तोही ॥परमातमा ब्रह्म नर रूपा। होइहि रघुकुल भूषन भूपा ॥

जब मैं उसे नहीं लेता था तब ब्रह्मा ने मुझसे कहा, "हे पुत्र, आगे तुम्हें इसमें क्या लाभ होगा? परमात्मा ब्रह्म मनुष्य रूप में रघुकुल के भूषण राजा होंगे।"
When I would not take it up, Brahmā told me, "Son, what will you gain ahead? The Supreme Spirit, Brahman in human form, will be the ornament of the Raghu kings."

दोहा ४८दोहा 48तब मैं हृदयँ बिचारा जोग जग्य ब्रत दान।जा कहुँ करिअ सो पैहउँ धर्म न एहि सम आन ॥ ४८ ॥
taba maiṃ hṛdayam̐ bicārā joga jagya brata dāna |jā kahum̐ karia so paihaum̐ dharma na ehi sama āna ||

तब मैंने हृदय में विचार किया कि जिसके लिए योग, यज्ञ, व्रत और दान किया जाता है, उसे मैं पाऊँगा; इसके समान कोई दूसरा धर्म नहीं।
Then I thought in my heart: for whom yoga, sacrifice, vows and giving are done, I shall gain him, and no dharma is the equal of this.
