Chapter 44 · The human body is a boat · Verses 1–

The fruit of this body is not the senses; even heaven is small and ends in pain. Those who give their mind to pleasures after a human birth take poison in place of nectar. No one will call them good, as one takes a gunja seed and throws away a touchstone. This immortal soul wanders through eighty-four lakhs of births in four kinds of birth. Pushed by Maya and circled by time, action, nature and the qualities, it wanders. Sometimes God, with no reason, kind to all, gives the human body. It is a boat across the sea of the world, with my grace as the wind in front, and a good guru as helmsman, a firm vessel; rare things made easy. The dohā says that one who does not cross the sea of the world with such a chance is a slanderer of what he has done, a dull mind, a killer of his own soul.

The fruit of this body is not the senses. Even heaven is small and ends in pain. If, after getting a human body, they give the mind to the senses, those fools turn nectar into poison.

Verse 2

No one will ever call that man good, who loses a touchstone and takes a gunja seed. This soul, which does not die, wanders through four kinds of birth and eighty-four lakh wombs.

It wanders always, driven by Maya, hemmed in by time, action, nature and the qualities. Sometimes, out of mercy, God, a friend with no reason, gives it the human body.

The human body is a boat for the sea of the world, my grace the wind blowing in front of it. A good guru is the firm vessel's helmsman. So hard to find, the means has been made easy to get.

One who does not cross the sea of the world, having got such a chance as human company, is thankless, dull, and goes the way of those who kill their own soul.
