Chapter 37 · Saint and wicked: the sandal and the axe · Verses 1–

Bharata asks leave to make one bold request. He is a servant, and Rāma gives joy to his people. The Vedas and Purāṇas have sung the greatness of saints, and Rāma himself has praised them and loves them. He wants to hear their signs, and asks Rāma to explain the difference between saint and wicked. Rāma tells him to listen to the signs of saints, which are many and well known. The way of saint and wicked is like the axe and the sandalwood: the axe cuts the sandal, and the sandal gives it its own scent. Therefore sandal climbs the heads of gods and is dear to the world, while the axe is burned in fire and beaten with a hammer.

You also praised them with your own lips, and the Lord loves them very much. I want to hear their signs, ocean of mercy, skilled in virtue and knowledge.

Protector of those who bow, explain to me the difference between saint and wicked.' 'Listen, brother, to the signs of the good, endless and known in the Vedas and Purāṇas.

The way of the good and the wicked is like the axe and the sandal tree. Listen, brother: the axe cuts the sandal, and the sandal gives its own fragrance to it.

So sandal climbs the heads of the gods and is dear to the world, while the axe is burned in fire and beaten with a hammer: that is its punishment.
