Chapter Seventeen · The gifts of clothes · Verses 1–

The friends are lost in joy at Rāma's words and stand with folded hands, unable to speak. Rāma sees their love and teaches them much wisdom, but they cannot say a word and only look at his lotus feet. He then has ornaments and clothes of many colours brought. Bharata with his own hands dresses Sugrīva, Lakṣmaṇa dresses the king of Laṅkā, and Rāma dresses the rest, including Jāmbavān and Nīla. They leave, keeping Rāma's form in their hearts. Aṅgada sits unmoving. Seeing his love, Rāma does not call him. At last Aṅgada rises with tears in his eyes and speaks, very humbly.

Hearing the Lord's words they were all lost in joy. 'Who are we, and where?' they thought, forgetting their own bodies. They stood fixed, with hands folded before him, and in great love could say nothing.

Verse 2

Then Aṅgada rose, bowed his head, and with tears in his eyes and hands folded spoke words so humble they seemed soaked in the juice of love.
