Chapter 122·The cure for the mind's diseases·Verses 1–
In this way the whole world is sick, filled with sorrow, joy, fear, love and parting. Bhuśuṇḍi has told a few of the diseases of the mind; the rare ones know them. By knowing them, sinners waste a little, but those who suffer do not die. Sense-pleasures are a bad diet that make them grow even in the hearts of sages. By Rāma's grace all diseases go, if the right union is made: a true guru as physician, faith in his word, restraint, and no desire for the senses. Devotion to Raghupati is the herb of life, and faith and a full mind the way of taking it. In this way the disease may go; otherwise a million efforts do not remove it. Know the mind is healthy when the heart has the strength of dispassion, a good appetite for wisdom grows daily, and the weakness that wants sensual pleasures is gone. When a man bathes in clear knowledge, devotion to Rāma stays in his heart. Śiva, Brahmā, Śuka, Sanaka, Nārada, and all the sages wise in Brahman, agree that one should love Rāma's lotus feet. All the Śrutis and Purāṇas say there is no happiness without devotion to Raghupati. A tortoise may grow hair on its back, a barren woman's son may kill someone, flowers may bloom in the sky, but the soul that opposes Hari finds no happiness. Thirst may pass by drinking a mirage, a hare may grow horns, darkness may kill the sun, but a soul turned from Rāma finds no joy. Fire may come out of ice. In the dohās: butter may come from churning water, oil from sand, but without worshipping Hari the world is not crossed: this conclusion is firm. A creator may make a mosquito Brahmā and Brahmā a mosquito; so, wise ones, give up doubt and worship Rāma. The closing śloka: I say it as certain, there is no other way; those who worship Hari cross the hard-to-cross.

In this way all the creatures of the world are sick, in sorrow, joy, fear, love and parting. I have told you a few diseases of the mind; they are in everyone, but only rare ones have noticed them.

Those who know them, sinners, waste away a little, but they are not destroyed, and the suffering do not die. The sense-pleasures that sprout like a bad diet grow even in the hearts of sages, what of poor men?
