Garuḍa, with love, asks seven questions: which body is the hardest to get; which sorrow is greatest and which joy; what saints and the wicked are like; which merit is greatest in the Vedas and which sin most terrible; and the diseases of the mind. Bhuśuṇḍi answers briefly. No body equals the human one, which all beings seek, and which is the ladder to hell, heaven or freedom, and gives knowledge, dispassion and devotion. Those who take it and do not worship Hari are the lowest of the low, who throw away the jewel to get bits of glass. There is no grief like poverty and no joy like meeting a saint. A saint's nature is kindness in thought, word and deed. The saints suffer for others' good, and the wicked cause others' pain. The saint is like the birch tree, which bears the pain of having its bark taken; the wicked are like the flax, who bind others and die flayed; the wicked, with no gain, harm others, as snake and mouse do. The wicked destroy others' wealth as hail kills crops, and the rise of the wicked brings pain, as the planet Ketu. The rise of a saint always gives joy, as the moon does for the world. The highest dharma is non-violence, and there is no sin like slandering others. Those who slander Hara or the teacher become frogs; those who slander the twice-born have many hells and are born as crows; those who slander gods or the Veda fall into Raurava; fools who slander saints become owls; those who slander all become bats. The mind's diseases: delusion is the root; from it spring many pains. Lust is wind, greed is phlegm, anger is bile; if the three brothers join, the fever of delirium comes. Then follow grief and other troubles: possessiveness is ringworm, envy itch, joy and sorrow gout; envy at others' happiness is leprosy; pride is a terrible swelling; hypocrisy and pride are boils; craving is dropsy; the three longings are the three-day fever; and the two kinds of fever are spite and unwisdom. How many bad illnesses can I name? The dohās: one illness kills a man, and these many cannot be cured, and torment the soul; how can he find peace? Rules, dharma, conduct, austerity, knowledge, sacrifice, prayer, gifts, and crores of medicines do not cure these, Hari's rider.
