Chapter 120 · The jewel of devotion · Verses 1–

Having told the teaching of knowledge, Bhuśuṇḍi says: hear the glory of the jewel of devotion. Devotion to Rāma is a lovely wishing-jewel that lives in the heart. It shines by day and night and needs no oil, lamp or wick. Delusion, the poor man, does not come near, and the wind of greed does not blow it out. The darkness of strong ignorance goes, and the moths of lust and the rest are beaten. Where devotion lives, the foes are not near; poison becomes nectar, enemies friends; no one finds joy without that jewel. The diseases of the mind do not trouble him, though they rule other souls. The one with Rāma's jewel in his heart has no pain even in a dream. The wisest people in the world are those who strive for the jewel. Though it is plain in the world, no one gets it without Rāma's grace; the means of getting it are easy, but unlucky men give themselves trouble. The Vedas and Purāṇas are the holy mountain, and Rāma's stories are the many lovely mines. Saints are the wise men with the pick-axe, and knowledge and dispassion are the two eyes. Whoever looks with feeling gets the jewel of devotion, the mine of all joys. Bhuśuṇḍi's faith is that the servant of Rāma is greater than Rāma: Rāma is the sea and the saints the clouds, Hari the sandalwood and saints the breeze. The fruit of all is Hari's lovely devotion, and none gets it without saints. Whoever keeps good company will find devotion easy. The dohās: Brahman is the ocean, knowledge the churning mountain, and the saints are the gods who churn the ocean of story and bring up the nectar, whose sweetness is devotion. By dispassion as a shield and knowledge as a sword, one kills the enemies, greed, delusion and the rest, and wins the victory, which is Hari's devotion; look, king of birds, and think.
