Chapter 118 · The lamp blown out · Verses 1–

The unbroken thought "I am He" is the flame of the lamp, very strong. The joy of knowing the Self is the bright light, and by it the root of the world, the confusion of difference, is destroyed. Strong ignorance, with its family, delusion and the rest, is wiped out in the dark. Then that intellect, having the light, sits in the house of the heart and unties the knot. If it is able to loosen the knot, this soul does its work. But Māyā, knowing the knot is loosening, puts many obstacles in the way. She sends powers and attainments, and these come and tempt the intellect with greed. They come with tricks and force, and put out the lamp with the wind of their garments. If the intellect is very wise it does not look at them, knowing them as enemies. If obstacles do not hold it, the gods then make trouble. The gates of the senses are many windows; at each the gods have taken their place. When they see the breeze of the senses coming, they push open the shutters. When this storm enters the house of the heart, the lamp of realisation goes out. The knot is not undone, the light is gone, and the intellect is troubled by the wind of the senses. The gods of the senses do not like knowledge, since they always love enjoyment; and the wind of the senses has confused the mind, so who can light the lamp again? The dohās say the soul then falls back into many kinds of worldly pain; Hari's Māyā is very hard to cross. Knowledge is hard to speak of, hard to understand, and its practice hard; if again many obstacles come, it is like a worm chance-forming a letter in wood.

It is hard to tell, hard to understand, hard to practise, and hard to discern; and if by chance it is done, as a worm may form a letter in wood, then many obstacles come again.
