Chapter 117 · The knot and the lamp of knowledge · Verses 1–

Hear this tale, beloved: hard to tell, hard to feel. The soul is a part of God, imperishable, aware, spotless and naturally joyful. Yet it became bound by Māyā, like a parrot or a monkey in a trap. A knot has formed between the aware and the dull, and though false, it is hard to undo. Since then the soul became worldly, and the knot does not loosen. The Vedas and Purāṇas speak of many remedies, but the more one tries, the more tangled it is. In the soul's heart is thick darkness; how can it see to loosen the knot? If God sometimes arranges the means, it may sometimes come undone. If a lovely cow of faith comes by Hari's grace to live in the heart, the self-denials, vows and rules that the Vedas call good conduct are her green grass; she eats, and the calf of feeling gets milk. The wise man, as the herdsman, with a vessel of trust and non-attachment, milks the milk of the highest dharma, boils it on the fire of desirelessness, cools it with the wind of contentment and forgiveness, and sets the curd with steadiness. Then glad, he churns with the churning-stick of reflection, with restraint as the post and truth and fine words as the rope. He then draws out the butter of pure dispassion. Then he lights the fire of yoga, throws the good and bad deeds in, and the butter melts into ghee of knowledge and the dirt of possessiveness burns off. Then the intellect, as realisation, takes the clear ghee, fills the lamp of the mind and sets it firm, makes a wick from the three states and three qualities taken out of cotton, makes it into the fourth state and trims it well.

Hear, dear one, this unspeakable tale: it can be felt but not told. The soul is a part of God, imperishable, aware, spotless, naturally a mass of joy.

That soul became subject to Māyā, lord, and was bound like a parrot or a monkey in a snare. A knot has formed between the aware and the dull; though false, it is hard to untie.

Verse 3

Since then the soul became worldly, and the knot does not loosen nor is he happy. The Vedas and Purāṇas speak of many remedies, but it does not loosen, it only tangles more.

Verse 4

In the soul's heart is deep darkness and delusion; how does the knot come to be seen and undone? If God brings such a meeting about, then now and then it may be loosened.
