Chapter 115·Knowledge and devotion compared·Verses 1–
Those who give up such devotion and labour only for knowledge are fools, who leave the wish-cow at home and wander looking for milk from the swallow-wort. Those who leave devotion and want happiness by other means are fools trying to swim a great sea without a boat. Hearing Bhuśuṇḍi, Garuḍa gladly said with a gentle voice: by your grace, Lord, no doubt, sorrow or confusion is left in me. I have heard Rāma's pure virtues and found rest by your grace. One more thing I ask: please explain. Saints, sages, the Vedas and Purāṇas say nothing is as hard to gain as knowledge; yet the sage told you of it and you did not honour it as you did devotion. How far apart are knowledge and devotion? Tell me all, Lord. Hearing Garuḍa's words, the wise crow spoke with respect: there is no difference at all between devotion and knowledge; both remove the suffering of birth. But sages speak of some difference; listen to it with care. Knowledge, dispassion, yoga and realisation are all male; and a male's power is strong in every way; woman is weak and dull by nature. The dohās begin: a man can leave a woman who is dispassionate and steady; but not one who is lustful, caught in the senses and turned from Raghubīra; and the wise man too, seeing a fawn-eyed woman's moon-face, becomes helpless, Hari's rider: woman is the Māyā of Viṣṇu made plain.
