Bhuśuṇḍi went to Ujjain, poor, dirty and sad, and in time gained some wealth, and served Śambhu there. A brahmin who worshipped Śiva by the Veda always did only that work; he was a very good man, who knew the highest good, a worshipper of Śambhu, and no slanderer of Hari. Bhuśuṇḍi served him with deceit; the brahmin was kind, a home of good conduct, and seeing him outwardly humble, taught him as a son. The best of brahmins gave him a Śambhu mantra and taught him in many ways. He would go to the Śiva temple and repeat the mantra, with pride and arrogance filling his heart. In the dohās he says he was wicked, full of dirt, mean-minded, of low birth, under delusion; seeing Hari's devotees and brahmins he burned and did wrong to Viṣṇu. His teacher always tried to instruct him, as he saw his conduct sad, but he felt great anger, for a proud man does not like good advice.भुशुंडि उज्जैन गए, दीन, मलिन, दरिद्र और दुखी थे; कुछ समय बाद कुछ संपत्ति पाई और वहाँ शिव की सेवा करने लगे। एक वैदिक ब्राह्मण सदा शिव की पूजा करते थे और उनका दूसरा काम नहीं था; वे परम साधु थे, परमार्थ को जानने वाले, शंभु के उपासक और हरि के निंदक नहीं थे। भुशुंडि कपट से उनकी सेवा करते थे; वे दयालु और नीति के घर थे, बाहर से मुझे नम्र देखकर पुत्र की तरह पढ़ाते थे। उन श्रेष्ठ ब्राह्मण ने मुझे शंभु का मंत्र दिया और अनेक प्रकार से शुभ उपदेश दिया। मैं शिव-मंदिर में जाकर मंत्र जपता, पर हृदय में दंभ और अहंकार बहुत था। दोहों में वे कहते हैं कि मैं दुष्ट, पापों से भरा, नीच बुद्धि, नीच जाति और मोह के वश था; हरि के भक्तों और ब्राह्मणों को देखकर जलता और विष्णु से द्रोह करता था। मेरे गुरु नित्य मुझे समझाते थे, पर मेरे आचरण से दुखी होकर भी वे मुझे समझाते रहे और मुझे बहुत क्रोध होता था; अभिमानी को नीति नहीं भाती।
