Though Hanumān's words were full of good, with devotion, wisdom, dispassion and right conduct, the proud Rāvaṇa laughed and said he had found a great teacher in a monkey. He tells the fool that death is near and he has begun to teach him. Hanumān says it will turn out the other way; he sees plainly that Rāvaṇa's mind is clouded. Hearing that, Rāvaṇa is much angrier and says why do they not take this fool's life at once. The demons run to kill. Then Vibhīṣaṇa comes with his ministers, bows and begs: it is against right conduct to kill a messenger; give some other punishment. All agree it is good advice. Rāvaṇa laughs and says: send the monkey away with a limb broken. Since monkeys love their tails, he tells them: wrap the tail in cloth, soak it in oil and set it on fire.
