Hanumān says he knows Rāvaṇa's glory: his fight with Sahasrabāhu, and his fame won in battle with Vālī. Rāvaṇa laughs the monkey's words away. Hanumān explains: he was hungry and ate fruit, and broke trees, as monkeys do. Everyone loves his own body, and those on the wrong path beat him, so he beat them back. For that Rāvaṇa's son bound him. He feels no shame at being bound; he wants to do his Lord's work. With folded hands he begs Rāvaṇa to drop his pride and hear his advice, and to look at his own family and give up his delusion and worship the one who takes away the fear of his devotees. Even Death fears him, who eats gods, demons and all that moves. Do not make an enemy of him; give up Jānakī on his word. Rāma, protector of those who bow, ocean of mercy, foe of Khara, will keep Rāvaṇa safe and forget his fault if he goes to him.
