Chapter 92 · The heads that grow back · Verses 1–

The arrows fly like winged snakes; first Rāma kills Rāvaṇa's charioteer and horses, breaks the chariot, cuts down banner and flag, and Rāvaṇa roars, his strength failing within. Quickly he climbs another chariot, ashamed, and hurls weapons of many kinds, but all his efforts fail, like the thoughts of one who delights in harming others. Then he hurls ten spears, and strikes the four horses to the ground. Rāma lifts the horses, angry, draws his bow and looses arrows. Like bees to the lotus-flowers of Rāvaṇa's heads, the arrows go, ten into each forehead, and pass through, with streams of blood. Streaming blood, the strong one runs. Rāma looses thirty arrows and throws down heads together with arms; but even as they are cut they grow new. Again Rāma cuts arms and heads; again and again he cuts them and each time new ones form quickly. The Lord of Kosala is very playful; the sky is covered with heads and arms, as if countless Rāhus and Ketus. As the Lord takes away each head, more appear, as the pleasures of the senses grow when indulged, and the wound is renewed again and again.

Again and again the Lord cut the arms and heads, the very playful Lord of Kosala. The sky was covered with heads and arms, as though countless Rāhus and Ketus were there.

As though many Rāhus and Ketus were running through the sky, streaming blood, Raghubīra's fierce arrows struck and did not let them fall to the ground. Each arrow cut a cluster of heads, and as they flew up they shone, as if Rāhu were angrily threading the sun's rays together here and there.

As the Lord removes his heads, they grow beyond number, as the sense-pleasures grow when served, and Death is new every day.

Explanation

The comparison is to desire: the more it is fed, the more it grows.
