लछिमन का मेघनाद पर जाना
Meghanāda wakes from his faint, is ashamed to see his father, and quickly goes to a cave in the great mountain, resolving to perform a sacrifice that would make him invincible. Here Vibhīṣaṇa tells Rāma that Meghanāda is performing an unholy sacrifice, and that if it is completed he cannot be beaten. Rāma, pleased, tells Aṅgada and the others to go with Lakṣmaṇa and destroy the rite. He tells Lakṣmaṇa to kill him by strength and wit, so the night-rangers waste away, and asks Jāmbavān, Sugrīva and Vibhīṣaṇa to stay with the army. Lakṣmaṇa takes bow and quiver and speaks like a cloud: if he returns without killing him today, he is no servant of Raghupati; even if a hundred Śivas help him, he will kill him, on Raghubīra's honour. Bowing to Rāma's feet, he sets off, with Aṅgada, Nīla, Mayanda, Nala and Hanumān.मेघनाद की मूर्छा टूटती है तो वह पिता को देखकर बहुत लज्जित होता है और तुरंत एक बड़े पर्वत की गुफा में जाता है, यह मन में ठानकर कि अजेय बनाने वाला यज्ञ करूँगा। यहाँ विभीषण राम से मंत्र की बात कहते हैं: नाथ, मेघनाद अपवित्र यज्ञ कर रहा है; यदि वह पूरा हो गया तो वह जीता नहीं जा सकेगा। राम सुनकर बहुत प्रसन्न होते हैं और अंगद आदि वानरों से कहते हैं कि लक्ष्मण के साथ जाकर यज्ञ का विध्वंस करो। वे लक्ष्मण से कहते हैं कि उसे बल और बुद्धि के उपाय से मारना, जिससे राक्षस घटते जाएँ, और जाम्बवान, सुग्रीव तथा विभीषण को सेना के साथ रहने को कहते हैं। लक्ष्मण कमर में तरकश कसकर, धनुष सजाकर बादल जैसी गम्भीर वाणी में कहते हैं कि यदि आज उसे मारे बिना लौटूँ तो रघुपति का सेवक न कहलाऊँ; सैकड़ों शिव भी उसकी सहायता करें तो भी रघुवीर की सौगंध, उसे मारूँगा। राम के चरणों में सिर नवाकर वे तुरंत चले, साथ में अंगद, नील, मयंद, नल और हनुमान थे।

Meghanāda's faint passed and, seeing his father, he felt great shame. He went at once to a cave in the great mountain, with the thought in his heart: I will perform a sacrifice that makes me unconquerable.

२2इहाँ बिभीषन मंत्र बिचारा। सुनहु नाथ बल अतुल उदारा ॥मेघनाद मख करइ अपावन। खल मायावी देव सतावन ॥

यहाँ विभीषण ने अपना मत कहा: 'हे अतुल और उदार बल वाले नाथ, सुनिए। मेघनाद, जो दुष्ट और मायावी है और देवताओं को सताता है, अपवित्र यज्ञ कर रहा है।
Here Vibhīṣaṇa gave his counsel: 'Listen, Lord, of unequalled and generous strength. Meghanāda, a wicked deceiver who troubles the gods, is performing an unholy sacrifice.

३3जौं प्रभु सिद्ध होइ सो पाइहि। नाथ बेगि पुनि जीति न जाइहि ॥सुनि रघुपति अतिसय सुख माना। बोले अंगदादि कपि नाना ॥

प्रभु, यदि वह सिद्ध हो गया तो उसका फल पा लेगा, फिर वह जल्दी जीता न जा सकेगा।' यह सुनकर रघुपति बहुत प्रसन्न हुए और अंगद तथा अन्य वानरों से बोले।
If he completes it, Lord, he will win the prize, and then he cannot be conquered quickly.' Hearing this Raghupati was greatly pleased, and spoke to Aṅgada and the many other monkeys.

'तुम सब भाई लक्ष्मण के साथ जाओ और यज्ञ का विध्वंस करो। लक्ष्मण, तुम उसे रण में मारो; देवताओं को डरा हुआ देखकर मुझे बहुत दुख होता है।
'All of you brothers go with Lakṣmaṇa and destroy the rite. Lakṣmaṇa, you kill him in the battle; seeing the gods in fear, I am much distressed.

जब रघुवीर ने आज्ञा दी, तब लक्ष्मण ने कमर में तरकश कसा और धनुष सजाया। प्रभु का प्रताप हृदय में धरकर रणधीर लक्ष्मण बादल की तरह गम्भीर वाणी में बोले।
When Raghubīra gave the command, Lakṣmaṇa tied his quiver at his waist and made ready his bow. Holding Prabhu's glory in his heart, the steady warrior spoke in a deep voice like a cloud.

'यदि आज मैं उसे मारे बिना लौट आऊँ तो रघुपति का सेवक न कहलाऊँ। चाहे सौ शिव भी उसकी सहायता करें, तब भी रघुवीर की दुहाई, मैं उसे मारूँगा।'
'If I come back today without killing him, I shall not be called a servant of Raghupati. Even if a hundred Śivas help him, still I will kill him, by Raghubīra's oath.'
