कपट मुनि

Kālanemi sets out and makes illusions on the road: a pond, a temple and a fine garden. Hanumān sees a lovely hermitage and decides to ask the sage for water to ease his weariness. The demon sits there in the disguise of a hermit, wanting to deceive the messenger of the Lord of illusion. Hanumān bows to him, and the false hermit begins to tell Rāma's virtues. He says that a great war is going on between Rāvaṇa and Rāma, and Rāma will win, without doubt. He claims he has seen it from here, with his sight of knowledge. Hanumān asks for water, and he gives a kamaṇḍalu. Hanumān says that so little water will not satisfy him. The hermit tells him to bathe in the pond and return quickly, for he will give him initiation so that he gains knowledge. In the dohā, as Hanumān enters the pond, a crocodile seizes his foot. He kills her, and she takes a divine body and rises into the sky in a heavenly chariot. ऐसा कहकर कालनेमि चला और मार्ग में माया रची: सरोवर, मन्दिर और सुन्दर बाग बनाया। पवनपुत्र ने एक शुभ आश्रम देखा और सोचा कि मुनि से पूछकर जल पीऊँ तो थकान मिटे। वहाँ राक्षस कपट का मुनि-वेश बनाकर शोभित था; वह मायापति के दूत को मोहना चाहता था। हनुमान ने जाकर माथा नवाया तो वह राम के गुणों की कथा कहने लगा। उसने कहा कि रावण और राम में बड़ा युद्ध हो रहा है, राम जीतेंगे, इसमें संशय नहीं। भाई, मैंने यहाँ से देख लिया, मेरी ज्ञान-दृष्टि का बल अधिक है। हनुमान ने जल माँगा तो उसने कमण्डलु दिया। हनुमान ने कहा कि थोड़े जल से मुझे तृप्ति नहीं होगी। उसने कहा कि सरोवर में स्नान करके शीघ्र आओ, मैं दीक्षा दूँगा जिससे तुम्हें ज्ञान मिले। दोहे में कहा है कि सरोवर में घुसते ही एक मगरी ने हनुमान का पैर पकड़ा; उसे मारा तो वह दिव्य शरीर धारण करके विमान पर चढ़कर आकाश में चली।
