Lakṣmaṇa saw the form Umā had taken and was amazed, with a great confusion in his heart. He could say nothing, but the steady-minded know the Lord's power. Satī's deceit was known to the lord of the gods, who sees all and is the inner ruler: remembering whom ignorance ends, that same Rāma is all-knowing, the Lord. Satī wanted to deceive even there; see the power of woman's nature! Telling in his heart the strength of his own Māyā, Rāma smiled and spoke in a soft voice. With joined hands he bowed, gave his father's name with his own, and asked, 'Where is Śiva, the bull-bannered? Why do you wander alone in the forest?'
