Chapter 299 · Chariots and horses ready · Verses 1–

Bound with the badges of heroes, the firm fighters came out and stood outside the city. The clever riders turned their horses through many paces and rejoiced to hear the wind-instruments. The charioteers made the chariots wondrous with flags, banners and jewel ornaments, and the whisks and bells made a sound that stole the glory of the sun's chariot. Countless black-eared horses were yoked to those chariots by the charioteers, all lovely and adorned, so that sages' minds were bewitched on seeing them. Some horses moved over water as on land, and their hooves did not sink, so great was their speed. They readied all their weapons and called the charioteers. Mounting chariot after chariot the wedding party gathered outside the city, and good omens appeared for everyone, whatever his errand.
