Chapter 290·The letter reaches Ayodhya·Verses 1–
The messengers reached Rāma's holy city and were glad to see its beauty. They sent word at the palace gate, and King Daśaratha called them in. They bowed and gave the letter, and the glad king rose and took it himself. As he read the lines tears came to his eyes, his hair stood on end and his chest filled. With Rāma and Lakṣmaṇa in his heart and the lovely letter in his hand, he stood unable to say a word of good or ill. Then, steadying himself, he read the letter again and the whole court was glad to hear the true news. Bharata and his dear brother, who were playing, heard of it and came. Asking with great love and shyness, they said, 'Father, from where has the letter come? Are our two dear brothers well? Say in what country they are.' Hearing the words so full of love, the king read the letter again.
