With great humility, in soft cool words, Rāma, hands joined, said, 'Hear, Lord: you are wise by nature; do not take a child's words to heart. A babbler and a child have one nature, and saints never fault them. He did you no wrong; I am your offender, Lord. Show grace or anger, kill or bind me; treat me as your servant. Tell me quickly how your anger can go, and I will do it, chief of sages.' The sage said, 'How can my anger go, Rāma, when your brother still glances at me so? If I have not put the axe to his throat, what has my anger done? At the sound of my axe the wives of kings miscarry; with the axe in my hand I see this enemy king's boy alive.'
