Chapter 275·Paraśurāma raises the axe·Verses 1–
Lakṣmaṇa tells the sage he seems to be calling Death with a shout, again and again for himself. Hearing his harsh words Paraśurāma readied his terrible axe. 'Now let no one blame me; this sharp-tongued boy deserves to be killed. I spared him much, seeing a boy, but now he is truly about to die.' Viśvāmitra said, 'Forgive the fault; saints do not count a child's faults and virtues.' The sage replied that his axe was sharp and he himself pitiless and quick to anger, and the one before him was a guilty traitor to his guru. He would have left him unkilled even as he answered back, only out of respect for Kauśika's gentle nature; otherwise he would have cut him down with the hard axe and with little effort cleared his debt to his guru. Viśvāmitra smiled in his heart: to the sage everything looks green; this is a sword of iron and not of sugarcane, and even now, unknowing, he does not understand.

Even as he answers back I leave him unkilled only for your gentleness, Kauśika. Otherwise I would cut him down with this hard axe and with little effort be free of my debt to my guru.'

Gādhi's son smiled in his heart: 'To the sage everything looks green. This is a sword of iron, not a sweet of sugarcane, and even now, unknowing, he does not understand.'
Explanation
'Everything looks green' is a saying for one used to easy victories who thinks every foe easy. Viśvāmitra knows Rāma and Lakṣmaṇa are iron, not sweet sugarcane that can be chewed up.
