Chapter 273 · Lakṣmaṇa's answer · Verses 1–

Lakṣmaṇa smiled and said softly, 'Ah, great sage, so proud of your warrior's strength! Again and again you show me your axe, as if to blow a mountain away with a puff. There are no pumpkin flowers here that wither at a pointing finger. Seeing your axe, bow and arrows I spoke with some pride. Seeing your thread and knowing you for a Bhṛgu's son, I bear whatever you say, holding back my anger. In our family we do not show heroism against gods, Brahmins, devotees of Hari and cows. To kill them is sin and to be beaten by them is disgrace, so we fall at your feet even if you strike. Your words are like a million thunderbolts; bow, arrow and axe are held in vain. If, seeing you, I said anything improper, forgive me, great steadfast sage.' Hearing this, the jewel of the Bhṛgu line replied with a deep voice, in anger.

Lakṣmaṇa smiled and spoke softly: 'Ah, great sage, so proud of your warrior's strength! Again and again you show me the axe, wanting to blow away a mountain with a puff.

There are no pumpkin flowers here that die at the sight of a pointing finger. Seeing the axe, bow and arrows, I said something with pride.

Explanation

A 'kumhaḍa-batiyā' is a tiny unripe gourd that withers at the lightest touch; the saying is that Lakṣmaṇa is not so easily frightened.

Verse 3

Knowing you for Bhṛgu's son and seeing your sacred thread, whatever you say I bear, holding back anger. Against gods, Brahmins, Hari's devotees and cows, our family does not show heroism.

Verse 4

Killing them is sin, and losing to them is disgrace, so we fall at your feet even if you strike. Your words alone are like a million thunderbolts; you carry bow, arrows and axe in vain.
