Sītā looked her fill at Rāma's beauty, then remembered her father's vow and her mind was troubled. 'Alas, father, you have made a terrible stubborn vow without seeing gain or loss. The ministers, afraid, give no advice; this is very improper in an assembly of the wise. Where is a bow harder than diamond, and where is this dark, soft-bodied youth? How can I be calm, Lord? A diamond cannot be pierced with a flower of sirisa. The whole assembly's mind has gone dull. Now Śambhu's bow, you are my only hope: be light and break.' She thought of throwing her own fault on the people, that they should feel the bow light at Raghupati's sight. Great grief was in Sītā's mind; each moment seemed an age. She looked at the Lord, then at the ground, with restless eyes like a pair of fish playing in the orb of the moon.

The ministers are afraid and no one advises; in an assembly of the wise this is most improper. Where is the bow, harder than diamond, and where is this dark, soft-bodied youth?

Lord, how can I keep my calm? A diamond cannot be pierced by a sirisa flower's tip. The whole assembly has lost its sense; now, Śambhu's bow, you are my only hope.

Let her own dullness fall on the people, so that they grow light at the sight of Raghupati. Great was Sītā's grief; each moment seemed to pass like a hundred ages.
