Chapter 213 · The city of Janaka · Verses 1–

The city's beauty cannot be told, for the mind is held wherever it goes. The handsome market and wonderful balconies look as if Brahmā had made them with his own hand from jewels. Rich merchants as wealthy as Kubera sit with all kinds of goods, and the crossroads and lanes are always sprinkled with fragrance. The houses are full of good fortune, as if painted by the god of love, and the men and women are fortunate, pure, gentle, righteous, wise and virtuous. Janaka's dwelling is peerless; the gods are spellbound by it, and the wall seems to have kept the beauty of all the worlds. Sītā's lovely house, white and jewelled, cannot be described.

The city's beauty cannot be described; wherever the mind goes, it is held there. The handsome market and wonderful balconies seemed jewelled, as if Brahmā had arranged them with his own hand.

Rich merchants, as wealthy as Kubera, sat with all kinds of goods. The crossroads were lovely and the lanes pleasing, always sprinkled with fragrance.

Where Janaka lived was most peerless; the gods were spellbound seeing its splendour. Seeing the wall, the mind was astonished, as if it had held back the beauty of all the worlds.

White palaces finely made in many ways, with jewels and golden screens: how can the beauty of Sītā's lovely dwelling be told?
