It is as if everything Rāvaṇa told Meghanāda had already been done. The demons, terrible to see, torment the gods, take many forms by magic and do whatever can uproot righteousness. They burn towns and villages wherever they find cows and brahmins. No good conduct is left, no one honours gods, brahmins or teachers, and no devotion, sacrifice or learning is heard of. If Rāvaṇa hears of any prayer, austerity or offering, he rushes up and destroys it, and he terrifies and drives out anyone who speaks of the Veda. जिस उपाय से धर्म की जड़ कटे, वेद के विरुद्ध वे वही सब करते थे। जिस-जिस देश में उन्हें गाय और ब्राह्मण मिलते, वहाँ के नगर, गाँव और पुर में वे आग लगा देते थे।

कहीं शुभ आचरण नहीं होता था; देवता, ब्राह्मण और गुरु को कोई नहीं मानता था। न हरिभक्ति थी, न यज्ञ, तप या ज्ञान; वेद-पुराण तो सपने में भी सुनाई नहीं पड़ते थे।

जप, योग, वैराग्य, तप या यज्ञ के भाग की बात रावण कानों से सुनता तो स्वयं उठकर दौड़ता, कुछ टिकने न देता, सबको पकड़कर क्रोध में नष्ट कर देता। संसार ऐसा भ्रष्ट और आचारहीन हो गया कि धर्म की बात कानों में सुनाई ही न पड़ती। जो वेद-पुराण की बात कहता, उसे वह तरह-तरह से डराता और देश से निकाल देता।
If Rāvaṇa hears of prayer, yoga, detachment, austerity or a sacrifice's share, he rushes up himself, lets nothing stay, seizes it all and destroys it in rage. So wicked and corrupt did the world become that no one heard a word of righteousness. Whoever spoke of the Veda and Purāṇa he terrified in many ways and drove out of the land.
