The demons can take any shape and know every trick, and have no righteousness or pity even in a dream. One day Rāvaṇa sits in his assembly, sees his countless sons, kinsmen and servants, and speaks in pride and anger. He says the gods are his enemies and never fight face to face. They can be beaten in only one way: let the demons go and break up every feeding of brahmins, every sacrifice, fire-offering and śrāddha. Then the gods will grow weak with hunger and fall into his hands.राक्षस इच्छानुसार रूप धर लेते हैं, सब माया जानते हैं, और सपने में भी उनमें धर्म या दया नहीं है। एक दिन रावण सभा में बैठकर अपने अनगिनत पुत्रों, सगे-संबंधियों और सेवकों को देखता है और अभिमान और क्रोध में बोलता है। वह कहता है कि देवता हमारे शत्रु हैं और सामने आकर नहीं लड़ते। उन्हें मारने का एक ही उपाय है: राक्षस जाकर ब्राह्मण-भोजन, यज्ञ, हवन और श्राद्ध सबमें बाधा डालें। तब देवता भूख से दुर्बल होकर अपने-आप उसके हाथ आ जाएँगे।

भूख से दुर्बल और बलहीन होकर देवता सहज ही आकर मेरे हाथ लग जाएँगे। तब मैं उन्हें भली-भाँति अपने वश में करके मारूँगा या छोड़ दूँगा।'
