Saying this, all the brahmins left, and the people of the city heard the news. They were troubled and blamed fate, which makes a swan wander like a crow. The false priest was sent back to his home, and the demon gave news to the ascetic. That wicked one sent letters here and there, and all the kings gathered armies and rushed. They surrounded the city, sounding drums, and every day there was fighting of many kinds. All the best warriors fell, doing great deeds, and the king fell to the ground with his brother. No one of Satyaketu's family was left; how can a brahmin's curse be false? The kings, having won over the enemy, settled the city again and went to their own cities, having gained victory and fame. The poet adds: Bharadvāja, when fate turns against a man, to him dust is like Mount Meru, his father like Death and a rope like a snake.
