Chapter 167·An easy way, with a catch·Verses 1–
'Listen, king: in the world there are many efforts, hard to do and yet may not succeed. There is one very simple way, but there is one difficulty. The means is in my hands, king, but I cannot go to your city. From the day I was born till today I have not gone to anyone's house or village. If I do not go, your work is lost; a confusing difficulty has come today.' Hearing this, the king said in a soft voice, 'Lord, the Vedas lay down this rule: the great show great love for the small. The mountain always carries grass on its head; the deep ocean bears foam on its crest; the earth always bears dust on its head.' Saying this, the king held the sage's feet: 'Lord, be kind; for my sake endure hardship, you who are kind to the poor, in whom the good see a friend.''
