तप का बल
'Do not be astonished in your mind, son; nothing is out of reach of austerity. By the power of austerity the Creator makes the world, and by it Viṣṇu became its protector. By the power of austerity Śambhu destroys it. Nothing in the world is beyond austerity.' The king grew deeply attached on hearing this, and the sage began to tell old stories. He explained at length action, dharma and history, detachment and discernment; and he told many marvellous tales of creation, upkeep and destruction. Hearing these, the king came under the ascetic's power and began to give his own name. The ascetic said, 'King, I know you. You acted deceitfully, and I liked it. Listen, king: wherever kings go, they do not give their names, by this rule. I am very fond of you and trust you, and I think that is your wisdom.''हे पुत्र, मन में आश्चर्य मत करो; तप से दुर्लभ कुछ नहीं है। तपोबल से ब्रह्मा जगत की रचना करते हैं, और तपोबल से विष्णु रक्षक हुए। तपोबल से शंभु संहार करते हैं; तप से अगम संसार में कुछ नहीं।' यह सुनकर राजा को बड़ा अनुराग हुआ और वह पुरानी कथाएँ कहने लगा। उसने कर्म, धर्म और अनेक इतिहास समझाए, वैराग्य और विवेक का निरूपण किया। उसने उत्पत्ति, पालन और प्रलय की अपार आश्चर्य भरी कहानियाँ कहीं। यह सुनकर राजा तपस्वी के वश में हो गया और अपना नाम बताने लगा। तपस्वी बोला, 'हे राजन्, मैं तुम्हें जानता हूँ। तुमने छल किया, वह मुझे अच्छा लगा। हे राजन्, सुनो, राजा लोग जहाँ-तहाँ अपना नाम नहीं बताते, ऐसी नीति है। मुझे तुमसे बहुत प्रेम है और विश्वास है, और मैं इसे तुम्हारी चतुराई समझता हूँ।'
