Chapter 161·Trust in a humble dress·Verses 1–
The king said, 'People full of wisdom, like you, who have lost their pride, always keep themselves hidden and look humble in every way. That is why saints say, and the Vedas call out, that the very poor are dear to Hari. Beggars with no house like you make even Brahmā and Śiva doubt. Whoever you are, I bow at your feet. Be kind to me now, lord.' Seeing the king's natural love and his strong trust in himself, he made himself the king's in every way and spoke with more show of affection: 'Listen, ruler of the earth, I tell you the truth. I have lived here a long time. Till now I have met no one, and I do not make myself known to anyone. Fame in the world is like fire; it burns the austerity done in the forest.' The poet adds: Tulasī says, fools are fooled by fine dress, not the wise; look at the lovely peacock, whose words are like nectar and whose food is a snake.
