They ate greens, fruits and roots and remembered Brahman, truth, knowledge and bliss. Then they began austerities to win Hari, giving up roots and fruit and living only on water. In their hearts was one wish, always: to see with their eyes the Supreme Lord, without qualities, undivided, endless, beginningless, on whom those who seek the highest meditate; whom the Vedas describe as 'not this, not this'; who is bliss in himself, free of limits and without equal; from a part of whom Śambhu, Brahmā and Viṣṇu arise in many forms. Even such a Lord is ruled by his servants and takes a body at play for the sake of a devotee. If the Vedas' word is true, then our wish will be fulfilled. In this way six thousand years passed with water as their food, and then seven thousand years more, living on air alone.
