Svāyambhuva Manu and Śatarūpā were the pair from whom the lovely human race was born. They were husband and wife of good conduct, whose way the Vedas still sing. King Uttānapāda was their son, whose son was Dhruva, the devotee of Hari. Their younger son was Priyavrata, praised by the Vedas and Purāṇas. Their daughter Devahūti became the dear wife of the sage Kardama, and the first Lord, kind to the poor, was carried in her womb as Kapila the merciful. He gave the Sāṃkhya teaching and was skilled in the thought of the true principles. Manu ruled a long time and guarded all things as the Lord had told him. Yet he did not feel detachment from worldly things while living at home.
