अपर हेतु
Śiva begins another cause for Rāma's birth, a strange story told at length: why the unborn, formless Brahman became king of Kosala. Rāma is the Lord Pārvatī saw walking in the forest with his brother, dressed as a sage, and whose deeds bewildered Satī in her body so that she went mad. Even now the shadow of that doubt is not gone from her. Śiva promises to tell the deeds of his play in that incarnation as far as his understanding goes, a cure for the sickness of doubt. Bharadvāja heard Śiva's words as repeated by Yājñavalkya; in shyness and love Umā smiled, and Śiva went on to tell of the incarnation and its cause. Śiva says he will tell it all to Bharadvāja, a story that takes away the dirt of the Kali age and brings good.शिव राम के जन्म का एक और कारण कहना शुरू करते हैं, एक विचित्र कथा जो विस्तार से कही जाएगी: जो अज, निर्गुण और अरूप ब्रह्म था वह कोसलपुर का राजा क्यों हुआ। यह वही प्रभु हैं जिन्हें तुमने वन में भाई के साथ मुनि वेश में घूमते देखा था, और जिनके चरित को देखकर सती के शरीर में तुम बावली हो गई थीं। आज भी तुम्हारी वह छाया नहीं मिटी है। उनके उसी अवतार में की गई लीला मैं अपनी समझ के अनुसार कहूँगा, जो भ्रम-रोग को हरने वाली है। शिव की यह वाणी सुनकर भरद्वाज संकुचित हुए, और उमा प्रेम से मुस्कुराईं। तब वृषकेतु शिव उस अवतार का कारण बताने लगे। शिव कहते हैं कि वह सब मैं तुम्हें सुनाऊँगा, हे मुनीश, मन लगाकर सुनो: राम की कथा कलियुग के मल को हरने वाली, मंगल करने वाली और सुहावनी है।

The Lord whom you saw wandering in the forest with his brother, in a sage's dress, whose deeds, seeing them, Bhavānī, you went mad in the body of Satī,

आज भी तुम्हारी वह छाया नहीं मिटती। भ्रम के रोग को हरने वाले उसके चरित सुनो। उस अवतार में उसने जो लीला की, वह सब मैं अपनी बुद्धि के अनुसार कहूँगा।
even now your shadow of doubt is not gone. Hear his deeds that take away the sickness of confusion. I will tell, as far as my understanding goes, all the play he did in that incarnation.

४4भरद्वाज सुनि संकर बानी। सकुचि सप्रेम उमा मुसकानी ॥लगे बहुरि बरने बृषकेतू। सो अवतार भयउ जेहि हेतू ॥

भरद्वाज ने शंकर की वाणी सुनी; उमा संकोच करके प्रेम से मुस्कुराईं। तब वृषकेतु शिव उस अवतार का कारण बताने लगे।
Bharadvāja heard Śaṅkara's words; shy, Umā smiled with love. Then Vṛṣaketu began to tell of the incarnation and the reason for it.
Explanationव्याख्या
याज्ञवल्क्य भरद्वाज को सुना रहे हैं कि शिव ने पार्वती से क्या कहा; वृषकेतु अर्थात् जिनकी ध्वजा वृषभ है, शिव हैं।
Yājñavalkya is telling Bharadvāja what Śiva said to Pārvatī; Vṛṣaketu, the one whose banner is the bull, is Śiva.
