Chapter Fourteen·Bowing to the poets·Verses 1–
Showing his strength to his mind like this, the poet will tell Rāma's lovely story. He bows to the feet of Vyāsa and the many great poets who told Hari's fame, and to the poets of this age who sang Rāma's virtues; also to the plain-speech poets who told Hari's deeds in common tongue, all who were, are or will be, without any deceit. He asks them to let the assembly of the good honour his verse, for what the wise do not honour is a child poet's wasted toil. Fame, verse and wealth are good when they do good to all, like the Gaṅgā. Rāma's fair fame in rough verse is a worry; but by their mercy it comes easily, like a fine silk patch on rough cloth. The dohās say that plain poetry and clean fame are honoured by the good, and even foes drop their old hate when they hear it; but that cannot be without a clean mind and he has little; the soraṭhās bow to the sage of the Rāmāyaṇa, to the four Vedas, like boats over the sea of becoming, and to the dust of Brahmā's feet; and the last dohā bows to gods, brahmins, the wise and the planets with joined hands, asking them to fulfil all his wishes.

I bow to their lotus feet. Fulfil all my wishes. I also bow to the poets of this dark age who told of Raghupati's qualities.

The very wise poets of common speech, who told Hari's deeds in their own tongue; those who have been, those who are, and those who will come: I bow to them all, leaving all deceit aside.

Be pleased, and give me this boon: that the company of the good honour my verse. A work the wise do not honour is a toil wasted by a child poet.

A wordplay: the same poem is called both sharp and soft, faultless and with faults (khara, dūṣaṇa), for the demons Khara and Dūṣaṇa appear in it.
