When Madana came to the hermitage, he made spring appear by his own magic: trees in bloom, cuckoos calling, bees humming, and a pleasant cool, soft, fragrant breeze that fans the fire of desire. Rambhā and other fresh, young heavenly women, skilled in every art of love, sang with many tunes and played in many ways. Pleased to see his helpers, Kāma tried many more tricks. But nothing of his art could touch the sage, and the sinner was frightened by his own fear. Can anyone press the limit of a man whose guardian is the lord of Ramā? In the end, afraid and beaten, Kāma and his company went and held the sage's feet and spoke in great distress. जब कामदेव उस आश्रम में गया, तब उसने अपनी माया से वसंत ऋतु रच दी। अनेक रंगों के वृक्ष फूल उठे, कोयलें कूकने लगीं और भौंरे गूँजने लगे। काम की आग भड़काने वाली तीन प्रकार की सुहावनी हवा चली। रंभा आदि नवयुवती देवांगनाएँ, जो काम की सब कलाओं में निपुण थीं, बहुत-सी तानों से गान करने लगीं और हाथ में गेंद लेकर अनेक प्रकार से खेलने लगीं। सहायकों को देखकर कामदेव प्रसन्न हुआ और उसने बहुत से और प्रपंच रचे। पर काम की कोई कला मुनि पर नहीं चली; पापी कामदेव अपने ही भय से डर गया। जिसकी रखवाली स्वयं रमापति करते हों, उसकी मर्यादा को कोई दबा नहीं सकता। अन्त में सहायकों समेत बहुत डरा हुआ कामदेव हार मानकर मुनि के चरणों में गया और बहुत दुखी वाणी में बोला।
