राम-कथा का आरम्भ
I knew your virtue and character, now hear the sport of Raghupati. Sage, listen: your meeting today brings me joy beyond telling. The story of Rāma is endless; even a hundred crore serpents cannot tell it, yet I will tell it as I heard it, remembering the Lord of speech who holds a bow. Śāradā is like a wooden doll and Rāma the puppeteer who knows all hearts; to whom he shows mercy, he makes the Word dance in the poet's heart. I bow to that merciful Raghunātha and tell clearly the tale of his virtues. A very lovely, great mountain, Kailāsa, where Śiva and Umā always live. Siddhas, ascetics, yogis, gods, kinnaras and groups of sages, all the virtuous, live there and serve Śiva, the root of joy.मैं तुम्हारे गुण और शील को जान गया हूँ, अब रघुपति की लीला सुनो। हे मुनि, सुनो, आज तुम्हारे मिलने से मेरे मन में जो सुख हुआ वह कहा नहीं जा सकता। राम का चरित अत्यन्त अमित है; सौ करोड़ शेषनाग भी उसे नहीं कह सकते। फिर भी जैसा मैंने सुना, वैसा वाणी के स्वामी धनुषधारी प्रभु का स्मरण करके कहूँगा। सरस्वती कठपुतली के समान हैं और अन्तर्यामी राम सूत्रधार हैं; वे जिस पर कृपा करते हैं, उसके हृदय के आँगन में वाणी को नचाते हैं। मैं उन्हीं कृपालु रघुनाथ को प्रणाम करता हूँ और उनके गुणों की निर्मल कथा कहता हूँ। कैलास पर्वत बड़ा रमणीय है, जहाँ शिव और उमा सदा निवास करते हैं। सिद्ध, तपस्वी, योगी, देवता, किन्नर और मुनियों के समूह, सब पुण्यात्मा वहाँ रहते हैं और सुख के मूल शिव की सेवा करते हैं।

मैं उन्हीं कृपालु रघुनाथ को प्रणाम करता हूँ और उनके गुणों की निर्मल कथा कहता हूँ। कैलास पर्वत बहुत रमणीय है, जहाँ शिव और उमा सदा निवास करते हैं।
