Chapter 96·Sumantra repeats the king's word·Verses 1–
Rāma asks Sumantra to tell his father that he is much like a father to Rāma himself, and so he pleads with folded hands: do your duty in every way, so that my father is not troubled for me. Hearing this talk between Rāma and the minister, Guha and his family were distressed. Then Lakṣmaṇa said some harsh words; the Lord, thinking it very improper, stopped him. In shyness Rāma gave him an oath, saying: do not send my brother's message. Sumantra then said, the king's word: Sītā cannot bear the troubles of the forest; however Sītā may return to Ayodhyā, that is what Raghubar and you must do. Otherwise I shall have no support and will not live, like a fish without water. The dohā: in her parents' or in-laws' house, wherever her heart wishes, there Sītā may live happily until the time of trouble is over.
