Chapter 92·Lakṣmaṇa on the world as a dream·Verses 1–
Guha says that Kaikeyī has become an axe to the tree of the Sun's line and made the whole world unhappy. He is full of grief at seeing Rāma and Sītā asleep on the ground. Lakṣmaṇa then spoke gently, in words soaked with knowledge, dispassion and devotion: no one gives another happiness or sorrow; everyone enjoys the fruit of his own deeds. Union and parting, enjoyment, good and bad, friend, enemy and neutral, are all a snare of confusion; birth and death, all the world's web, wealth and woe, karma and time, earth, house, wealth, city, family, heaven and hell, all that is seen, heard or thought in the mind, has delusion as its root, with no real meaning. As a beggar may dream of being a king, or a king a pauper, and on waking has neither gain nor loss, so this world should be understood.

As a man may become a beggar in a dream, or a king, or a pauper, or Indra, and on waking has neither gain nor loss, so understand the world's show.
