The men and women of the village look at the beauty of Rāma, Lakṣmaṇa and Sītā and ask each other what kind of parents sent such children to the forest. Some say the king did well to give their eyes this gain. Then Guha, the Niṣāda king, chose in his heart a lovely śiṃśupā tree and led Rāma to it. Rāma said it was fine in every way. The townsfolk bowed and went home; Rāma went to say his evening prayers. Guha spread a soft bed of kuśa grass and young leaves, thought the fruit and roots pure, sweet and tender, and set out water in leaf-cups. Sītā, Sumantra and Lakṣmaṇa ate roots and fruit with Rāma; the Lord of the Raghus lay down, and his brother pressed his feet.
