Chapter 66 · Sītā asks to go · Verses 1–

Sītā goes on speaking to Rāma. She says the forest gods and goddesses will care for her as a mother-in-law and father-in-law would, a bed of kuśa grass and young leaves will be her comfort, and roots and fruit will taste like nectar. Looking at his lotus feet every moment, she will pass her days gladly. The forest's troubles that he named are not even a tiny part of the pain of being parted from him. She asks him to take her along and not to leave her behind.

'The generous forest gods and goddesses will look after me as a mother-in-law and father-in-law would. A bed of kuśa grass and young leaves will be lovely, and with my Lord beside me it will be softer than the bed of Love himself.

Verse 2

Roots, bulbs and fruit will be my food, as sweet as nectar, and the hills will be like hundreds of palaces of Ayodhyā. Looking at my Lord's lotus feet every moment, I will live gladly, like the cakravākī bird by day.

Explanation

The cakravākī is a bird that is happy only while it can see its mate; the pair are parted at night.

Verse 3

bana dukha nātha kahe bahutere bhaya biṣāda paritāpa ghanere | prabhu biyoga lavalesa samānā saba mili hohiṃ na kṛpānidhānā ||

Lord, you have told me of many troubles in the forest: fear, sorrow and burning pain. But all of them together, O Lord of mercy, are not equal to even a tiny part of the pain of being parted from you.

Verse 4

Knowing this in my heart, O wisest of the wise, take me with you and do not leave me. What more shall I plead, my Lord? You are full of kindness and you know every heart.

Keep me in Ayodhyā only if my life will stay in me until the end of the years; otherwise it will not. You are a friend of the poor, beautiful, kind, and a store of good nature and love.
