Chapter 63·Demons and wild beasts·Verses 1–
Man-eating night-wanderers roam, taking a crore of false forms. Mountain water makes you very sick; the dangers of the forest cannot be told. There are fierce snakes, dreadful birds, bands of demons and thieves who steal women and men. Even the brave are afraid when they remember the deep forest; you, deer-eyed one, are timid by nature. Swan-gaited one, you are not fit for the forest; hearing of it, people would blame me. Can a swan fed on the lake of Mānasa's nectar live in a salt sea? Can a cuckoo that plays among new mango groves look well in a forest of thorny bushes? Think so, and stay at home, moon-faced one: the forest has great pain. He who does not bow his head to the advice of a natural friend, a guru or a master will surely regret it in his heart and lose his good.
