Chapter 48 · What the people say · Verses 1–

What did fate tell us, what did it hear, what does it want to show, what has it shown? Some say: the king did wrong; he should have thought and not given the boon to a wicked woman. Some say the king is not to blame, the wise do not blame him; he knew dharma's limit. Others tell the tales of Śibi, Dadhīci and Hariścandra, one to another. Some praise Bharata's consent; some listen in silence. Some stop their ears, bite their tongues and say: this is a lie, you lose your merit by saying it. Rāma is dear as life to Bharata. The moon may drip fire, and poison may become nectar, but Bharata would never in a dream do anything against Rāma.
