Chapter 47·The city blames Kaikeyī·Verses 1–
Fate had spoiled the matter just when it was settled, and everywhere people cursed Kaikeyī. What came over this sinner, to put fire on a house she had roofed? She wants to tear out her own eyes to see better, to pour out nectar and taste poison. Crooked, hard, wicked and unlucky, she has become a forest fire to the bamboo of the Raghus' line. She sat on a branch and cut the tree; she made a great show of sorrow in the midst of joy. Rāma was always dear as life to her; what made her take up this crookedness? The poets say truly that a woman's nature is hard to grasp and deep in its hiding, in every way. Catching her own shadow one may succeed, but a woman's ways cannot be known, brother. What can fire not burn, what can the sea not hold, what can a strong woman not do, whom does Time not eat in the world?
