Chapter 46·The news goes through the city·Verses 1–
Blessed is the birth, on this earth, of one whose conduct gladdens his father; the four aims of life are in the hand of one to whom father and mother are dear as life. By keeping your command I gain the fruit of my birth. I will come back soon, as you command. I will go and ask leave of Mother, then, touching her feet, I shall go to the forest. Saying so, Rāma went away; the king, in his grief, gave no reply. The sharp news spread through the city, like a scorpion's sting climbing the whole body. Hearing it, all the men and women were distraught, like a vine and tree seeing a forest fire. Whoever heard it beat his head, great sorrow and no calm. Their faces dried and their eyes flowed, and grief could not be contained in their hearts, as if an army of the pathos of compassion had marched into Ayodhyā with drums.
