The night passes for Janaka and his queen, counting Rāma's and Bharata's virtues, like a wink. At dawn the royal company wakes, bathes and worships the gods. Rāma goes to the guru after bathing, bows at his feet and, reading his mood, says that Bharata, the townsfolk and the mothers are grieving and troubled by his forest life, and Janaka and his company have borne trouble many days. He asks the guru to do what is fit, since the good of all is in his hands. Rāma is very reserved as he speaks, and the sage is thrilled to see his gentle nature. Vasiṣṭha says that without Rāma all comforts are like hell for both companies. Rāma is the life of lives, soul of souls, joy of joys, and fate is against those who leave him and like home.
