Hearing of the Kosala king's end, all of Janaka's city went mad with grief. Seeing Videha then, no one felt his name, "free of the body", was true. Hearing of the queen's wickedness, the king was like a snake without its jewel and could not see what to do. Bharata's rule and Rāma's exile grieved the lord of Mithilā. He asked his wise ministers what to do, but with Ayodhyā in such a knot no one could say whether to go or stay. Steadying his heart, the king sent clever spies to learn Bharata's true or ill intent. They went to Ayodhyā, learned Bharata's way and saw his deeds, and Bharata set out for Citrakūṭa while the spies set out for Tirhut.

"Videha" means "without a body", one who has risen above bodily feeling; his grief seemed to contradict the name.
